When your doctor checks your blood pressure, do you ever wonder why they do that? Why checking your blood pressure is important?

Checking your blood pressure regularly gives you insight into your risk of developing a stroke or heart disease. The higher your blood pressure, the more at risk you are.

If your systolic blood pressure is 130 mmHg and your diastolic blood pressure is 80 mmHg, you have hypertension. Nearly half of American adults are struggling with hypertension.

Trust me, everyone, checking your blood pressure is crucial. Hypertension has no symptoms.

My blood pressure was on the higher side, and I’m someone who eats healthy and exercises regularly (high blood pressure and cholesterol are genetic). Fortunately, I was able to bring down my blood pressure. The last I’ve checked, it’s normal now.

I previously thought it was because I stopped eating meat, but I’ve been a regular CBD user for over a year now. While I don’t think CBD brought down my blood pressure, it may be a good idea to look into this cannabinoid and if it can help you.

TL;DR?

CBD isn’t a miracle product, and the evidence that it can help high blood pressure is seriously lacking. Be sure to talk to your doctor about trying CBD.

Did you get the “okay” from the doc? If so, I recommend using CBD oil with the sublingual method. You get better and faster absorption with this technique. The CBD oils I recommend the most are Plus CBD Drops, CBDPure Hemp Oil, and Spruce CBD Oil.

What Is High Blood Pressure?

Best CBD for High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure means the force of blood in your blood vessels is too high. If your blood pressure is too high (a condition called hypertension), it increases your risk of a stroke, heart attack, and even kidney problems.

As stated previously, high blood pressure has no symptoms, so checking your blood pressure regularly is crucial.

Your blood pressure reading is expressed as a fraction. The first number is your systolic pressure (the pressure of blood in the blood vessels), and the bottom number is diastolic (blood pressure between heartbeats).

Systolic blood pressure at 120 or lower is normal, and diastolic blood pressure at 80 or lower is normal. But there are different levels of hypertension:

  • Elevated: 120-129/80
  • Stage 1: 130-139/80-89
  • Stage 2: +140/+90
  • Hypertensive crisis: 180+/120+

I was only at an elevated level when I had my blood pressure scare.

But still, I have friends who have high blood pressure, and that medication isn’t cheap. I was able to bring down my blood pressure with a simple diet change, but it’s best to discuss your options with your doctor and see if CBD can help.

Types of High Blood Pressure

There are two different types of high blood pressure:

  • Primary
  • Secondary

Most hypertension cases are primary. While the cause of hypertension is unknown in this case, it can be due to various causes. These causes may include age, weight, stress, diet, and lifestyle.

Secondary hypertension cases have a specific cause, which is usually medication or another disease.

These may include hormonal problems, kidney disease, thyroid issues, Cushing’s syndrome, and sleep apnea.

Some medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), birth control, and steroids, are medications that commonly cause hypertension. If you take drugs, such as amphetamines and cocaine, hypertension from these substances also falls into this category.

What Does the Science Say About CBD and High Blood Pressure?

CBD has been promoted as a one-size-fits-all product. But can it really help with your blood pressure?

Keep in mind, CBD and its benefits haven’t been fully studied. Therefore, it’s not clear if CBD can improve the vascular system

Any studies on CBD’s effects on the vascular system seem to be mild. For example, CBD can cause acute vasorelaxation, widening the aorta (a heart artery).

However, we know more about CBD and how it affects some of the causes and lifestyle decisions that can lead to high blood pressure.

For example, there’s enough research to back CBD’s stress-relieving benefits. Stress can affect blood pressure in different ways, and anxiety episodes can cause short bursts of increased blood pressure (though stress usually doesn’t cause long-term blood pressure problems).

Keep in mind, CBD does come with side effects that can impact your blood pressure. This includes increased heart rate.

What Does the Science Say About THC and High Blood Pressure?

What if you’re interested in trying full-spectrum CBD or high-THC medical marijuana strains? Does THC improve your blood pressure? While research is still in the early phases, what has emerged is also positive.

For example, THC can also enhance vasorelaxation. However, THC also comes with side effects such as increased heart rate. I notice THC is worse at increasing heart rate than CBD.

I’m reading different things about this side effect; some sources say this increase in heart rate can worsen blood pressure, whereas other sources are saying this increase in heart rate won’t impact your blood pressure.

I suggest you ask your medical marijuana doctor if consuming high-THC strains will impact your blood pressure.

Best CBD Dosage

There is no recommended CBD dosage for hypertension. It’s best to follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions. If the manufacturer doesn’t provide instructions, ask your doctor for a recommendation.

If this is your first time using CBD, start with a low dose and slowly increase it over time. This helps you understand your tolerance and will decrease the risk of unwanted side effects. I suggest starting with 5mg/day.

How I Chose These Products

Some things I always look for in CBD products are:

  • Brand reputation
  • Type (I only recommend CBD edibles for tinctures for blood pressure)
  • Hemp sourcing
  • Whether or not it contains THC
  • Test results

In other words, I only recommend products that I would use.

Best CBD Products for High Blood Pressure

CBDPure Hemp Oil 1000

CBDPure Hemp Oil 1000

CBDPure is a great brand because they make natural CBD products with no additives. This is a full-spectrum product and has 1,000mg of CBD. If you want a less potent product, CBDPure also sells this product in 300mg and 600mg strengths.

Pros

  • Third-party testing
  • Natural product
  • Different potency options

Cons

  • No flavor options

Spruce 750mg Lab Grade CBD Oil

Spruce 750mg Lab Grade CBD Oil

I wanted to recommend a CBD oil at a more moderate potency for this next one. Spruce is a reliable brand with comprehensive third-party testing, natural ingredients, and no pesticides.

They’re a family-owned business based in Colorado, and all of their products are made in the USA.

They also source their hemp from Kentucky and North Carolina and use the moonshine extraction method. Yes, they extract CBD using moonshine. Spruce claims this method yields more and higher quality CBD and terpenes than CO2 extraction.

Pros

  • A family-run business that’s based in the USA
  • Different potencies, this product has a moderate potency of 750mg
  • Uses the moonshine extraction method for a higher yield of CBD and terpenes

Cons

  • Peppermint bark flavor – might be too sweet for some
  • Expensive compared to the competition

Joy Organics Broad-Spectrum CBD Softgels

Joy Organics Broad-Spectrum CBD Softgels

Joy Organics delivers some of the highest quality CBD products. They go above and beyond with their production compared to the competition. They only use organically grown hemp and make all of their products using nanoemulsion technology that improves CBD absorption.

I mentioned broad-spectrum softgels here, but they also sell full-spectrum ones.

I also like the idea of taking softgels and capsules as opposed to gummies. Softgels are just as easy to dose, and you don’t get the extra calories and sugar. Joy Organics sells their softgels in 10mg and 25mg potencies.

Pros

  • Nanoemulsion technology increases CBD absorbency
  • Broad-spectrum CBD contains no THC
  • Softgels don’t come with extra calories or sugar

Cons

  • Not vegan (contains gelatin)
  • Expensive compared to the competition

Royal CBD Honey Sticks

I don’t want to recommend gummies because, let’s face it, eating sugary sweets isn’t exactly good for your blood pressure, either. However, one honey stick contains only 15 calories and 4 grams of sugar! Plus, the 10mg CBD is a plus.

Royal CBD is another great brand. They offer high-quality and organic products. I only see raving reviews for their products. They also have excellent customer service and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Pros

  • Uses organically-grown and non-GMO hemp-extracted using CO2 extraction
  • 10mg/CBD per stick, high potency
  • Lab reporting

Cons

  • One box is $84, very expensive
  • No other flavors except for honey

Plus CBD Oil Drops

Plus CBD Oil Drops

I feel like I recommend this brand in every post I write! But there’s a reason why. First off, Plus CBD is an industry leader. They’re one of the first CBD brands out there, so they have an incredible reputation. They’re also one of the few CBD brands that invest in clinical trials.

While this company is based in the USA, they source their hemp from Europe. The EU has very strict hemp cultivation standards, so you can be sure that the product you’re receiving is of high quality.

As far as the drops are concerned, they’re available in two different potencies (250mg and 750mg) as well as unflavored and peppermint. But don’t think the unflavored tastes like earthy hemp – monk fruit is an added ingredient, which acts as a natural sweetener (and it’s delicious).

Pros

  • Uses EU-certified hemp, which is high-quality
  • Plus, CBD exercises transparency and invests in clinical trials
  • Even the unflavored is delicious

Cons

  • These drops contain lots of ingredients. I already contacted the company, and the ingredients are safe, but it freaked me out when I first got the products.

FAQs

Question: Is CBD the Best Hypertension Treatment?

Answer: I wouldn’t say so. Definitely talk to your doctor about ways to decrease your blood pressure. But if you want to use CBD for other symptoms, such as stress, I say go for it.

As I said earlier, I made a small change to my diet, which helped drastically. But this wasn’t approved by my doctor. If your doctor suggests any diet or lifestyle changes and/or prescribes medication, then definitely follow their instructions.

Question: Which Form of CBD Should I Take?

Answer: As you can see, there are multiple forms of CBD. I only mentioned the CBD products you digest (edibles and oil tinctures), but you have many other options. Vapes and topicals are other popular CBD products.

If you ask my opinion, oil tinctures taken in the sublingual method are the best. They have fast and effective absorption and are a very flexible option. However, oil tinctures may be complex for the new user. In that case, I recommend softgels or capsules.

Topicals are best for centralized pain and skin problems. The effects of CBD vaping on your lungs is unknown, so I say avoid this method altogether.

Question: How Do I Take CBD Oil?

Answer: You can take CBD oil in one of two ways: the sublingual method or mixing the oil with food or drink.

If you’re unsure of what the sublingual method is, this is when you hold the product under the tongue. Dose out the CBD in the dropper and lift up your tongue. Dispense the liquid under your tongue. Hold for 60 seconds and swallow.

If you want to mix CBD oil with food, I wouldn’t recommend mixing it with certain foods because of the oily texture. However, CBD oil works as a great salad dressing! You can also mix it into your smoothie.

Question: What Is the Strongest CBD Product?

Answer: Penguin’s Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil in 5,000mg is the most potent CBD product now.

Question: What Is Hemp Oil?

Answer: Hemp oil and CBD oil are terms often used interchangeably. However, be cautious when buying hemp oil. Traditionally, hemp oil doesn’t contain any CBD. However, hemp seed oil is high in nutrients, so it’s also often taken as a supplement.

Bottomline

There’s a reason why your doctor checks your blood pressure during your yearly exam. If your blood pressure is too high, it can cause various problems.

While the evidence is lacking, CBD does seem to have some benefits with blood pressure, though those benefits are mild.

Be sure to still live a healthy lifestyle and eat a nutritious diet. Always talk to your doctor before trying CBD.
